The School of Economics supports and manages a number of highly sought-after scholarships and bursaries for domestic and international students. Below is a brief description of the scholarships and who should apply.

Economics Undergraduate Indigenous Scholarship

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide assistance to students of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background who have a keen interest in economics and a demonstrated need for financial support.

Eligibility	Commencing undergraduate domestic student. Enrolled or intending to enrol in the Bacehlor of Economics program.
Scholarship details	Up to 100% tuition fee waiver. Up to the duration of the program. Number awarded may vary.
Scholarship focus	Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
Tentative dates	Applications typically open in January and close in March.

Warren Braxton Bannister Bursaries in Economics

Established in 2005 and maintained by an endowment from the estate of the late Warren Braxton Bannister.

Eligibility	Current undergraduate domestic or international student. You are enrolled in the first year of one of the following programs: Bachelor of Economics Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics (Honours) Bachelor of Advanced Finance and Economics (Honours).
Scholarship details	At least $3,000 awarded. 1 year duration. 1 awarded per year.

EJ Fisher Scholarship

Established in 2020 as part of the Create Change Scholarship Match Scheme and in collaboration with Alumni Friends, Dr Catherine A Lawrence and Mr Geoff Lawrence the scholarship supports domestic students accepted into the Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics Honours program facing financial hardship.

Eligibility	Current or future domestic student. You are enrolled or intend to enrol full-time in the Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics (Honours) program.
Scholarship details	At least $4,500 awarded but limited to the value of the annual distribution fund. Up to 4 years duration. 1 awarded per year.

The Matthew McLennan and Richard Howes Outstanding Honours Collaboration Scholarship

This scholarship encourages collaboration and teamwork between high-performing Honours students from the UQ Business School and School of Economics.

Eligibility	Current domestic or international student. Enrolled in Honours program within the School of Business or School of Economics.
Scholarship details	$7,000 awarded for each student. Awarded for Semester 2 only. 2 awarded per year (1 to an Economics student, 1 to a Business student).

The Archibald Scholarship

The purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage and reward the study of Economics.

Eligibility	Current domestic or international student. Enrolled full time in any of the following Honours programs: the Bachelor of Economics (Honours) (as a commencing student) the Bachelor of Advanced Finance and Economics (Honours) with an economics major (and completed 48 units). Have a Grade Point Average of at least 6.5 across these undergraduate economics courses: ECON2010 ECON2020 ECON2030 ECON2040 ECON2050 ECON2300 ECON3010 ECON3020 ECON3350 ECON3360.
Scholarship details	$10,000 awarded to each student. Up to 1 year duration. 1 awarded per year.

FitzGerald Scholarship

The purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage and reward the study of Economics.

Eligibility	Current domestic or international student. Enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Economics (Honours). Completed the Bachelor of Economics from UQ with a major in Economics and Public POlicy or Quantative Analysis. Have obtained a GPA of at least 6.25 in the Specific Courses in the Bachelor of Economics: ECON2010 ECON2020 ECON2030 ECON2040 ECON2050 ECON2105 ECON2300 ECON3010 ECON3020 ECON3330 ECON3350 or ECON3360.
Scholarship details	$10,000 awarded to each student. Up to 1 year duration. 1 awarded per year.

The Tomas Riha Scholarship

Established through a gift from the Riha family in 2022 under the Queensland Commitment matching scheme. The Scholarship is in memory of Associate Professor Tomas Riha, to honour his work and achievements.

Eligibility	Current udnergraduate domestic student. Enrolled in the Bachelor of Economics or a dual program that includes the Bachelor of Economics.
Scholarship details	At leasr $4,500 awarded each year that it is held. Minimum completion time of the program the student is enroleld in. Up to 1 scholarship may be awarded each year as tenure becomes vacant.

The Summer and Winter Research Programs offer scholarships to students wishing to undertake a research internship over the summer and winter vacation periods.

Research internships provide students with the opportunity to work with a researcher in a formal research environment so that they may experience the research process and discover what research is being undertaken in their field of interest at UQ.

Economics Postgraduate Coursework Indigenous Scholarship

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide assistance to students of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background to study economics with us at a postgraduate level.

Eligibility	Current or future domestic postgraduate student. You are enrolled, or intending to enrol, in a postgraduate coursework program administered by the School of Economics. You are an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
Scholarship details	Up to 100% of the tuition fee. For the duration of the program. 1 awarded per year.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Economics Postgraduate Support Scholarship

The scholarship aims to encourage, support and enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in a postgraduate program through the School of Economics to purchase technology and travel back to Country during their studies.

Eligibility	Current or future domestic postgraduate student. You are enrolled or intending to enrol in a postgraduate coursework program administered by the School of Economics. You are an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander who identifies as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and who is accepted as such by the community in which you have lived.
Scholarship details	$4,000 awarded in the first year, $2,000 in the second year. Up to 2 years duration. Number awarded may vary.
Scholarship focus	Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander

Supports Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students studying business or economics at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Eligibility	Current or future domestic student. Enrolled in Undergraduate, Honours, Postgraduate or Postgraduate research (HDR) course. Enrolled full-time in the School of Business or School of Economics. Are an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and are accepted as such by your community.
Scholarship details	One year duration. Number awarded may vary. The Faculty will determine the value of scholarships awarded in any year.

InterFinancial Excellence in Finance and Economics Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2019 by InterFinancial Corporate Finance Ltd and is maintained by an annual gift. The Scholarship is in memory of former colleague, Paul Rogers.

Eligibility	Current or future domestic student. Enrolled in Undergraduate, Honours or Postgraduate coursework. You are enrolled or intending to enrol full-time in the Bachelor of Advanced Finance and Economics, or the Bachelor of Economics, or associated dual degree programs; or any postgraduate coursework program in the School of Economics.
Scholarship details	$5,000 awarded. 1 year duration. 1 awarded per year.

The Jean W Maddock Bursary

The purpose of the bursary is to encourage and support a financially disadvantaged student studying at UQ's School of Economics. The bursary was established in 2019 and is maintained by donations from the Maddock family.

Eligibility	Current or future domestic student. Enrolled in Undergraduate, Honours or Postgraduate coursework. You are enrolled in any economics coursework.
Scholarship details	Up to $3,000 awarded. 1 year duration. 1 awarded per year.

The Norman C Maddock Bursary

Established in 2019 and maintained by donations from The Maddock Family, the bursary is to encourage and support a financially disadvantaged student studying at the School of Economics.

Prizes & awards

Prizes are available to both domestic and international students as they're awarded on the basis of academic merit. No application is required for any of the prizes listed below.

The Marsden Jacob Prize In Memory Of Dr Tony Hand

Established in 2010 and maintained by the income of an endowment gift of $25,000 from Marsden Jacob Associates in memory of their colleague and friend Dr Tony Hand, a Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Economics from The University of Queensland.

Study level	Undergraduate
Eligibility	Awarded by the Head, School of Economics. Enrolled in the Bachelor of Economics. Highest mark for first attempt at Environmental Economics (ECON3700).
Value	The Head, School of Economics will determine the value of the prize each year, but will be at least $1,000 but limited to the annual income from the fund.

QCA Prize

The QCA is an independent agency that is responsible for economic regulation in Queensland. It determines the prices that can be charged by monopoly businesses for certain goods and services and also approves the terms and conditions of access to the assets held by these businesses.

Study level	Undergraduate
Eligibility	Awarded by QCA on the recommendation of the Head, School of Economics. Bachelor of Economics domestic student who achieves the highest combined result in two economics courses; Regulatory Economics (ECON3440) and Advanced Microeconomics (ECON3010). Recipients must maintain full-time enrolment in the Bachelor of Economics (single or dual program). The prize recipient must be prepared to attend a presentation of the award and to appear in promotional material for QCA and the School of Economics.

Richard W. Staveley Memorial Prize

Richard W. Staveley Memorial Prize was established in 2019 and is supported by an endowment.

Study level	Honours
Eligibility	Final year student in the Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics (Honours) program. Best performance (highest average in all listed courses at first attempt only): PPES1101 Politics, Philosophy, Economics 1 PPES2101 Politics, Philosophy, Economics 2 PPES3101 Politics, Philosophy, Economics 3 PPES4101 Politics, Philosophy, Economics 4.
Value	$1,000

Synergies Economic Consulting Honours Prize

Synergies Economic Consulting offers a broad range of economic and finance advisory services. These services encompass microeconomic analysis and modelling, regulatory and competition issues, cost/benefit and financial analysis, business case development and public policy.

Study level	Honours
Eligibility	The Bachelor of Economics (Honours) or Bachelor of Advanced Finance and Economics (Honours) student who achieves the highest overall proficiency in ECON6910 Honours Thesis. Awarded by Synergies Economic Consulting on the recommendation from the Head of the School of Economics. Recipients must maintain full time enrolment in the Bachelor of Economics (Honours) or Bachelor of Advanced Finance and Economics (Honours) - single or dual program. The prize recipient must be prepared to attend a presentation of the award and to appear in promotional material for Synergies Economic Consulting and the School of Economics.
Value	$1,000

BEL Alumni Excellence Prize

Established in 2021 by alumnus Lawrence Au (MBA Alumni ’82) and other Alumni of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law. There will be three prizes within each of the schools recognising excellence in academic achievement for undergraduate students within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law who have completed their first year of full-time study).

Study level	Alumni
Eligibility	Any undergraduate student who has completed one year of full-time study who – is enrolled in their second year of an undergraduate program at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law or a dual program that includes an undergraduate program at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law; completed a minimum of 8 units in a Faculty of Business, Economics and Law program in the year prior to award; and had not completed prior tertiary study at a Bachelor level or above in the year prior to award. Basis for award: Highest marks at the end of their first year of full-time study.
Value	One prize will be awarded to a student from each School of the Faculty. The income from the endowment fund will be shared equally between the prize recipients.
