Prizes and awards

The Marsden Jacob Prize In Memory Of Dr Tony Hand

Established in 2010 and maintained by the income of an endowment gift of $25,000 from Marsden Jacob Associates in memory of their colleague and friend Dr Tony Hand, a Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Economics from The University of Queensland.

Eligibility
  • Awarded by the Head, School of Economics.
  • Enrolled in the Bachelor of Economics.
  • Highest mark for first attempt at Environmental Economics (ECON3700).
ValueThe Head, School of Economics will determine the value of the prize each year, but will be at least $1,000 but limited to the annual income from the fund.

 

QCA Prize

The QCA is an independent agency that is responsible for economic regulation in Queensland. It determines the prices that can be charged by monopoly businesses for certain goods and services and also approves the terms and conditions of access to the assets held by these businesses.

Eligibility
  • Awarded by QCA on the recommendation of the Head, School of Economics.
  • Bachelor of Economics domestic student who achieves the highest combined result in two economics courses; Regulatory Economics (ECON3440) and Advanced Microeconomics (ECON3010). 
  • Recipients must maintain full-time enrolment in the Bachelor of Economics (single or dual program).
  • The prize recipient must be prepared to attend a presentation of the award and to appear in promotional material for QCA and the School of Economics.

Richard W. Staveley Memorial Prize

Richard W. Staveley Memorial Prize was established in 2019 and is supported by an endowment.

  • Final year student in the Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics (Honours) program.
  • Best performance (highest average in all listed courses at first attempt only):
    • PPES1101 Politics, Philosophy, Economics 1
    • PPES2101 Politics, Philosophy, Economics 2
    • PPES3101 Politics, Philosophy, Economics 3
    • PPES4101 Politics, Philosophy, Economics 4.

Synergies Economic Consulting Honours Prize

Synergies Economic Consulting offers a broad range of economic and finance advisory services. These services encompass microeconomic analysis and modelling, regulatory and competition issues, cost/benefit and financial analysis, business case development and public policy.

Eligibility
  • The Bachelor of Economics (Honours) or Bachelor of Advanced Finance and Economics (Honours) student who achieves the highest overall proficiency in ECON6910 Honours Thesis.
  • Awarded by Synergies Economic Consulting on the recommendation from the Head of the School of Economics.
  • Recipients must maintain full time enrolment in the Bachelor of Economics (Honours) or Bachelor of Advanced Finance and Economics (Honours) - single or dual program.
  • The prize recipient must be prepared to attend a presentation of the award and to appear in promotional material for Synergies Economic Consulting and the School of Economics.

BEL Alumni Excellence Prize

Established in 2021 by alumnus Lawrence Au (MBA Alumni ’82) and other Alumni of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law. There will be three prizes within each of the schools recognising excellence in academic achievement for undergraduate students within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law who have completed their first year of full-time study).

Eligibility
  • Any undergraduate student who has completed one year of full-time study who –
    • is enrolled in their second year of an undergraduate program at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law or a dual program that includes an undergraduate program at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law;
    • completed a minimum of 8 units in a Faculty of Business, Economics and Law program in the year prior to award; and
    • had not completed prior tertiary study at a Bachelor level or above in the year prior to award.
  • Basis for award:
    • Highest marks at the end of their first year of full-time study.
ValueOne prize will be awarded to a student from each School of the Faculty. The income from the endowment fund will be shared equally between the prize recipients.
