What do a managing director in finance, a business leader and philanthropist, a lawyer and company director, and two entrepreneurs have in common?
These five distinguished individuals are alumni from The University of Queensland’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law – and they have each been honoured with UQ Alumni Awards for their efforts to create change in their fields and the world at large.
As in previous years, BEL alumni were well-represented in the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Alumni Excellence category, picking up two of the five awards on offer. The 2017 recipients were Chair of Orica and non-executive director of BHP Billiton Ltd and BHP Billiton Plc Malcolm Broomhead, and managing director of QIC’s Global Liquid Strategies Susan Buckley.
BEL alumni were also recognised in the Distinguished Young Alumni and Alumni Friends UQ Alumnus of the Year categories.
BEL Faculty Executive Dean Professor Andrew Griffiths said the five Faculty recipients were to be commended for their professional accomplishments and strong community engagement.
“Each of our BEL awardees has used their platform to give back in some way,” he said.
“Whether that is through mentoring, advocacy, philanthropy or social enterprise, we are incredibly proud of their efforts to make the world a better place.”
All 2017 UQ Alumni Award recipients were nominated by their peers and selected by a committee led by UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj.
The awards will be formally presented at UQ’s Courting the Greats ceremony on Wednesday 11 October.
