Happy Friday everyone after a wild round of global tariffs!  Tariffs have elicited spirited discussions in my recent alumni dinners in Sydney, Melbourne and (last week) Brisbane. Here is this week’s update:

As previously advised, the Academic Promotion round is now open, please visit the Academic Promotion website for more information. I am also re-circulating the School process internal timetable for your convenience. Interviews for BEL Level C and D promotions are currently scheduled as per below, though dates are subject to change based on Local Promotions Committee availability:

  • 27 August 2025
  • 29 August 2025
  • 5 September 2025

Congratulations and Thanks

  • Thank you Renuka, Yaying and Rose Linke for organising and hosting the first UQ School of Economics Thought Leadership event of 2025; Empowering Women: Policy Intentions and Outcomes. The event included an expert panel critically analysing key efforts, assessing their real-world impact on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • Thank you to everyone that completed the Pulse Survey! The School of Economics had an overall response of 61.11%, higher than our sister BEL Schools, with the Business School at 54.72% and the Law School at 48.57%. I look forward to receiving the results and working on what we need to do next together.
  • Congratulations to Annari and Rodney who received praise from a UQ Master of Economics alumnus on a UQ LinkedIn post asking “Who was your favourite lecturer at UQ?”. The alumnus shared their praise for both that show real interest in ensuring their students fully understand content.

Opportunities and Events

  • How many pigs are in Carol’s office? We ask a lot of BIG questions here at the School of Economics but get ready to answer the most puzzling one. Guess how many pigs are in Carol's office? A special prize awaits the closest guess. Please submit your answers here.

  • Australia-Japan Foundation 2025 Grants call for applications. The Australia-Japan Foundation has announced the opening of the 2025 grants round. The estimated grant value, ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 per year, will be considered. Funding requests of a maximum of $80,000 for a one-year grant, as well as multi-year grants of a maximum of $50,000 per year for up to three years, may be considered in exceptional circumstances. The grant is open to Australian organisations/individuals and Japanese citizens/organisations. Please see attached for guidelines and visit the Global Partnerships website for more information. Closing date: by 2pm AEST Tuesday 6 May 2025.
  • Australia-Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme. Applications for the 2025 Australia-Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme are due to UQ Research Office by 5pm Thursday 12 June. The scheme supports exchanges for Australian researchers to spend time at partner institutions in Germany and for collaborating German researchers to spend time at Australian universities. It is open to academic staff members in teaching and research, or research only roles, and to PhD or Research master’s students who are part of a research project application submitted by an eligible UQ staff member. More information (including T&C) and the Application Form can be found on the UQ Research Office Website.
  • UQ Reconciliation Action Plan Network and Choir. Yesterday I attended a Stretch RAP Implementation Network workshop – which had some good discussion and the report of lived experience of discrimination here in Queensland in recent times, which was sobering. The call went out to join the UQ RAP Network, and, as an initiative of the RAP Network, a choir that will sing in National Reconciliation Week. It was stressed that it is not a prerequisite to join the choir to be able to sing, only to be able to mimic singing! More information is enclosed.
  • Monash Winter Finance conference. See the details enclosed if interested.
